Library Information: Borrowing Policies

Who May Borrow Materials?

The following patrons may borrow materials from the Law Library:

  • Catholic University of America Law students, faculty, and staff
  • Catholic University of America Law alumni
  • Catholic University of America students, faculty, and staff

NOTE:

  • Visitors to the law library may not take materials out of the law library.
  • Catholic University of America non-law alumni may not take materials out of the law library.

In order to use materials which are on reserve at the Circulation Desk, visitors must present a valid driver's license. A card will then be issued, which must be presented in order to use reserve materials.  Visitors may use reserve books, DVDs (a key to an AV room will be supplied), and laptop locks. Reserve materials may not be taken out of the law library.

What Materials May be Borrowed?

The Law Library is primarily a reference collection. As such, most library materials do not circulate. Only single-volume treatises may be checked out. Primary source materials, digests, looseleaf binders, mult-volume sets, books updated by pocketpart, periodicals, do not circulate outside the library.

Renewals

Renewals

All materials may be renewed online except for materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. Please contact the circulation department to request a renewal for an Interlibrary Loan.

To renew:

  1. Login to your library account (see link below)
  2. Click the "items currently checked out" link
  3. Check the appropriate boxes in the renew column and click "Renew Selected." If you want to renew everything, simply click "Renew All."

If the item renews successfully, a new due date will appear under "Status."

If an item does not renew, a message will appear on the screen. Possible reasons an item does not renew:

  1. Too many renewals: the item has been renewed the maximum number of times. Please return the item to avoid being charged overdue fines.
  2. You owe too much money: you must pay your overdue fees before you can renew your items. Pay your fees or return the item(s) to avoid being charged overdue fines.
  3. Too soon to renew: the item was just checked out. Wait a few days and try again.

Notices

Circulation Notices

All notices are sent via email. Please login to your library account (see link below) to verify that your e-mail address is correct. As a courtesy, the library sends notices before an item is due and after an item is due. The library is not responsible for misdirected notices. The notices are a courtesy only; it is the patron's responsibility to know when items are due.

Late Fees

Late Fees

Overdue fines are assessed when materials are renewed after the due date or returned late to the Library.

  • Non-reserve items: $.50 per item per day
  • Reserve items: $.25 per item per hour

Late fees are not collected until they reach $5.00. Replacement fees are $50 per item. Borrowing privileges may be suspended if excessive fines accumulate. Students' academic records and/or diploma may be withheld if library materials are not returned or outstanding fines are not paid.
