Maryland Court of Appeals
The Court of Appeals is the highest court in Maryland. It hears cases almost exclusively by way of certiorari (discretionary review).
Maryland Court of Special Appeals
Created in 1966, the Court of Special Appeals is Maryland’s intermediate appellate court.
Maryland Circuit Courts
Maryland has eight judicial circuits. Circuit Courts generally handle more serious criminal cases and major civil cases.
Maryland District Court
The Maryland District Court hears all landlord-tenant cases, replevin actions, motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors, and certain felonies.
Maryland Orphans' Court
The Maryland Orphans’ Court is the state’s probate court and also has jurisdiction over guardianships of minors.
