Law Journal Staff: A Research & Policy Guide

A guide for staff members of the Catholic University Law Review and the Catholic University Journal of Law & Technology. The guide provides some tips for source collection and outlines some of the library's policies applicable to the journals.

Checking Out Books

Since the law library is primarily a reference collection, most materials cannot be checked out. Only single-volume treatises, which are not updated in any way, can be checked out. Reference books may not be checked out. Books may not be placed on reserve for the purpose of cite-checking.

Each journal is provided with law library borrowing cards, to be used by journal staff to check circulating books out of the law library.

  • Books are loaned for one semester with a due date of December 1 in the fall and May 1 in the spring.
  • Books checked out in the fall may be renewed until May 1.  Books must be brought physically to the law library circulation desk in order to be renewed. Books can be renewed only by full-time Circulation staff.
  • Books checked out in the spring may not be renewed.  All books must be returned by May 1.  Exceptions to this policy may be made on a case-by-case basis.
  • The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for renewing books prior to December 1 and returning all books by May 1.
  • Failure to renew books by December 1 or return books by May 1 will result in a loss of borrowing privileges for the journal and may result in a diploma/transcripts hold on the Editor-in-Chief’s academic record.
  • Each journal is responsible for paying replacement costs for lost or damaged books.
  • Borrowing cards are for journal business only; they are not for students’ personal use.
  • Borrowing cards may not be used for Reserve materials.
  • Borrowing cards may not be used for Interlibrary Loan.

The Law Library is not a part of CUA Libraries. Please refer to the CUA Libraries tab for information on their borrowing policies.

Law students must use their own CUA ID to check out materials from the other CUA libraries on campus.  The journal cards are not accepted at these libraries.  All graduate students, including law students, are entitled to a loan period of one semester for regular circulating items at CUA libraries.
